Jessie May nurses help develop ways to enable terminally ill children to communicate

Jessie May

Jessie May provides holistic family-centred support for children who have a life-limiting illness and their families. It has a dedicated team of children’s nurses and nursery nurses which provide specialist care and support to help alleviate some of the pressure on families. The support is provided in the comfort of the family’s own home whenever possible from the time of diagnosis onwards. Its team of nurses work closely with other professionals who are involved in supporting the family to ensure continuity of care and that all needs are met, whether physical, emotional, social or spiritual.

Jessie May has provided nursing care at home for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions since 1996. Currently, it is supporting just under 80 families, 21 of which were new referrals in 2014/15. It is also providing bereavement support for over 20 families. To date, this is the highest number of families it has supported. Jessie May has also expanded its service to provide short break services for children with continuing health care needs in the Bath and north east Somerset area.

The True Colours Trust has provided substantial support to Jessie May since 2003 with grants amounting to over £500,000. In March 2013, Trustees agreed to continue its support for Jessie May’s work by awarding a further grant for core support over three years.
